Lupie’s Restaurant

Remember in my last post where I told you we took our soup and sandwiches back up and got our money back from Crisp?  We went straight from there to Lupie’s.  I ride by their Huntersville location all the time on my way to my friend’s house, but never had time to stop.  Today was my day to finally try some Lupie’s!

I gotta tell you, when I first went in to Lupie’s, I was a little taken aback.  It’s..uh…pretty casual in there.  Looks like it could use a lick and a promise, and maybe a coat of paint.  But, the servers could not be nicer and you kinda get used to the weird apathy vibe and settle in to eat some hearty (if heart clogging) food.

We didn’t formulate a good plan, and ended up getting kinda the same thing.  I got a bowl of chili as I had lost most of my appetite over the Crisp Debacle.  It tasted good, but it was so chunky and meaty, I found it more hearty than I cared to eat.  It was tasty, it just got to be too much.  What was delish to me was the side of cornbread that came with my chili!  Good crumb and perfectly warm with butter, yum!

Dustin’s meal was better.  He got a Carolina Dog, with chili, slaw, mustard and onions.  It came with chips.  He let me have one tiny bite.  The hot dog was huge, piled high with sloppy toppings.  The wiener itself was huge (that’s what she said) and had a nice snap to it.  I’ll probably have that next time I go.

Lots of other folks around us were having the meat and three of the day, and enjoying that, so if country cooking is more your speed, you may enjoy that.  But you should go.  Just take off your fancy pants.

Crisp in Charlotte

Everyone talks about how great Crisp is.  I, unfortunately, did not find it so.  Sorry.

First, I’m not a fan of the minimalist furnishings.  I felt like I was in a FroYo shop.  The chairs were tiny and uncomfortable (read cheap) and the interior was so tight that even at the off time we ate (late lunch) we were still in people’s way with my knee walker.

My husband and I both ordered a cup of soup and a sandwich.  The soup of the day on this day was a tomato basil.  That is my favorite soup, so I was excited!  This soup, however, was absolutely flavorless.  How can that be?  I’m telling you, I would have preferred a bowl of Campbell’s.

I got the Turkey Gobbler which billed itself as a “house roasted” turkey sandwich.  It looked (and tasted) like any sliced turkey you could get in a dairy case.  The bread looks so good with its Panini press marks, but it was all a disappointment.  The sandwich was no better than a turkey sandwich I made at my house.

Turkey Gobbler

Dustin got the Roma sandwich.  It comes with prosciutto, salami, Mozzarella, tomatoes, roasted red peppers, basil, and a Balsamic Reduction on grilled bread.  Sounds amazing and flavorful, right?  Well, it was better than mine, but just barely.  Everything we tried simply lacked flavor of any kind.

We were so disappointed, we did something we haven’t ever done before (to my memory).  We brought the food back up to the counter, asked for a refund and went to another restaurant.  In Crisp’s defense, they didn’t fight us. They offered to make us something else, but after sampling 3 different menu items, we just didn’t feel confident that we would be happy.

Mama Ricotta’s

I’ve been to Mama’s now 3 times, and each time I go it gets better.  It’s right around the corner from my doctor in Charlotte (the wonderful Bruce Cohen of OrthoCarolina Ankle and Foot Institute) so we went for lunch after one appointment.  After this, we knew we had to go back for dinner.  So, the foodie crew loaded up and went!  Twice!

Actually, for a nice dinner out, Mama Ricotta’s is very reasonable.  They offer family sized entrees to share and I’ve never left there when we all weren’t full as a tick.  Also, the restaurant is lively and nearly always crowded.  You would probably do well to get reservations on a Friday and Saturday night.  We’ve always been well taken care of by our servers, too.

SALADS and SIDES

The Caesar Salad is a classic Caesar with cheese, croutons and dressing.  The dressing is tangy and delicious, and the romaine was crisp and fresh.  My only complaint was that the darn thing was perhaps too cheesy.  Is that even a problem?  But it really was overloaded, I’d prefer a bit less next time.

My dinner companion ordered a side of roasted vegetables.  They were grilled over the wood fire, very simply prepared, and very fresh.

MAIN COURSES

The pizza is not thin and crispy, and not deep dish.  It is made in a wood burning oven so it gets lightly charred on the bottom and remains chewy on the inside of the crust.  The toppings that you choose (we’ve tried Italian sausage, chicken sausage and prosciutto) take on that smokiness from the oven, as well, for a rustic flavor.  My only complaint is with the house-made chicken sausage.  Our order had far too much anise in the sausage, making it taste very licorice like.  I’d not get that topping again.

The Penne alla Vodka is perfect by itself, and a great favorite of the restaurant.  You honestly cannot taste the alcohol, either.  It’s a very creamy tomato sauce which is perfect with the penne pasta.  I’ve had it with both shrimp and chicken and both are delicious additions.  The shrimp is cooked perfectly, not at all rubbery.  The chicken is tender and flavorful.  This is one of my favorite dishes.

Spaghetti and Meatballs is a staple at most Italian restaurants, and these meatballs were no exception.  They were tender and savory, clearly simmering in the warm tomato sauce for a long time.  The pasta was also perfectly cooked, with the tomato sauce having just enough acidity to counter the pasta.

The Amma’s Cheese Ravioli is filled with creamy ricotta, mozzarella, romano and Parmesan cheeses and topped with a savory marinara soft.  The pillows of ravioli is soft and moist and very light, in spite of the many cheeses.  It is a very basic dish, but a solid one.

Veal Parmesan was a slight disappointment to my husband.  I’m not sure what he was expecting, but he thought it could have been better seasoned.  He said he would not get that the next time he visited.

Maybe my favorite dish here, the Papparadelle with Oxtail & Kobe beef ragu is like your Italian grandmother’s version of pot roast.  It is hearty, with a beef stock based sauce, filled with slow cooked, tender beef and small cubed carrots.  The papparadelle is handmade, too!  It is comforting and rustic and reminds me of Autumn.  I’ve ordered this twice now.

The lasagna is another popular favorite.  Mama Ricotta’s version is full of meat and cheese and smothered with marinara sauce and more mozzarella cheese.  It is creamy and very filling!

Crab and Shrimp Risotto has also been one of my favorites.  A large mound of creamy risotto topped with lump crabmeat, shrimp and mussels and with just a hint of lemon for the bite of acid.  It was comforting and luxurious at the same time.  On my next trip, I will be ordering this dish.

DESSERTS

The desserts are not the highlight of this restaurant, admittedly.  We’ve tried quite a few and while we were happy enough, they weren’t exceptional enough to revisit the next few visits.

The Ciabatta Bread Pudding is topped with a generous scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream, that melts over your warm pudding to create a richly sweet sauce that mingles with the caramel goodness leaking out of your pudding.  It was yummy, and a good version of the dessert.

Tiramisu is a typical Italian dessert made with ladyfingers soaked in coffee and mascarpone cheese sweetened with sugar and layered with a sprinkling of cocoa on top.  Though coffee is not my favorite flavoring, this version was smooth and delicious…also very pretty!

That night there was a special dessert on the menu.  It was a chocolate cupcake, filled with a creamy white center, supposedly in the style of a Hostess Cupcake.  It was delicious and full of robust chocolate flavor.

The last dessert we enjoyed was the special cheesecake.  It is layered with cake.  My friend pronounced it delicious!

300 East in Charlotte

300 East is a quaint little restaurant in a house on..well..you know.  It has plentiful parking in the back and even some seating outside in the front.  It also has these gorgeous picture windows that if you are lucky, like me, you can sit behind and see all that the folks outside do, unobstructed, and still enjoy the air conditioner.

For starters we had soup and salad.  I had the tossed salad which had organic mesclun greens, tomatoes, cucumbers and topped with a Balsamic Vinaigrette that was tangy with just a touch of sweetness.  It was fresh and delicious.  Dustin had the soup of the day, which was tomato basil.  It was creamy and hearty, and the basil provided a refreshing bite to the rich soup.

For his entree, Dustin got the Asian Tuna burger.  That’s a burger made with fresh ground tuna (not from a can), grilled and topped with Thai chili sauce, seaweed salad, pickled ginger and wasabi served on a wheat Kaiser roll.  He chose black beans as his side.  Though he loves tuna, I don’t think it was rare enough for him (gross), but he ate the whole thing.  I did try the black beans and they were flavorful and spicy!

I chose the Grilled Shrimp BLT Panini ~ The shrimp were grilled and cut in half (to life flatter on the bread) and topped with applewood smoked bacon, pepper cheese, arugula and a tomato aioli on crispy sourdough bread.  It was served with a side of potato salad.  The bread was so crunchy it was a perfect balance to the tender shrimp and the tangy aioli.  That peppery arugula was the perfect capper to cut through all of the richness of the aioli and the cheese.  It was the waitresses recommendation, as well.

This charming restaurant is a favorite of Charlotteans and we can understand why.  I’m going to need to go back for dinner soon!

Carolina Cafe

The Foodie Crew went out of our comfort zone, and back into South Carolina this week!  I must admit, I was doubtful of my friend’s pick.  When I called for reservations, I was told they didn’t take them.  Strike one!  Not only am I impatient about waiting, but after the accident, I find it hard to stand for long periods of time.  I’m so glad I prevailed!

This place is pretty far off of the beaten path.  You have to know it’s there, you probably are not just going to “run across” it.  Grab your GPS, plug in the digits (people still say that, right?) and head out.  When you arrive, you’ll see it jam packed with people.  Put your name on the list and wait.  When you sit down, you’ll see cinder block walls.  Get over it.  Seriously.  My steak was better at that hole in the wall than at Ruth’s Chris.

So, let’s see…we have an out of the way location, a lack of atmosphere and no reservation taking.  Doesn’t sound too promising, right?  Settle down.  The food is worth the trouble.

Appetizers

We ordered two appetizers, one was the Aloha Chicken and the other was fried onion rings.  The Aloha Chicken was a hot dip, with a creamy base then topped with cheddar cheese.  It was served with tortilla chips.  It was so good, though at first we were taken aback by how soupy it was.  We got over it quick, because it was so flavorful, with tender chicken, and just a tiny amount of sweetness from the pineapple juice.

The onion straws were nothing special, but they were good!  They were thin strips fried crisp and served with a spicy dipping sauce, reminiscent of a Remoulade.  The onions were a tiny bit oily but they were delicious, so no one complained.  We couldn’t finish them, however.  They give you a very healthy portion.

Salads

All of the meals come with a salad.  They are nice sized and very fresh, with homemade dressings.  I didn’t get a picture, because you know…it’s a salad.

Entrees

We all, for once, got four different things.  The first entree was the Beef Tips smothered with mushrooms, peppers, onion and shrimp and melted Monterrey Jack cheese covered all.  The tips were filet and Jeri pronounced the meat very tender, and the shrimp very fresh.  As you can see below, it comes with a large sweet potato, and that mixture in the cup?  Yeah, that’s melted butter and brown sugar.  My lord, it is good.

My hubs got the Cajun ribeye.  It was served with more of those yummy shoestring onion rings and cheese grits.  The steak was cooked perfectly and spicy and the grits were cheesy creamy goodness.

Robert ordered the Barbecued Ribs everyone raves about.  They were very tender and smoky, and just fell right off of the bone.  He got the whole rack, and was about to eat only half.  It came with French Fries, crispy and salty!

I got the Filet Mignon and added mushrooms.  It was served with a baked potato, but that was so unnecessary.  That might have been the best steak I’ve ever had, and I KNOW it was better than Ruth’s Chris.  Tender, juicy with just the right amount of chargrilling….and perfect doneness.  If only this place wasn’t an hour from my home, I’d eat there once a week.

Desserts

Oh my goodness we were so full after that delicious meal, but what’s that the waitress said?  Homemade desserts??  Yes please.

The men opted for the Lemon meringue pie, and it had the perfect tang that only comes from fresh squeezed lemon, a perfect crust and a creamy firm meringue.  Nothing could be better, right?

Well.  Then we tasted the Apple Dumpling with ice cream.  Cinnamony, pillowy, appley goodness.  I don’t even like apples, and that is the best tasting dessert I’ve had in a long time…ever?  If you go..get that.  Even if you don’t like apples, either.

We put off going to Carolina Cafe once and almost did again because of the distance and lack of reservation taking.  I am so glad we sucked it up and went.  It is truly one of those “diamonds in the rough” places.  Enjoy!

Chopstix in Mooresville, NC

After picking up a Radon monitor for my husband in Troutman, the kids and I were starving, but didn’t want to drive all the way into Mooresville proper for some lunch.  We spied Chopstix as we were coming down Doolie Road, and decided to give it a try.  What a wonderful discovery!!

We started with an appetizer called the Chopstix Combination.  It had 2 Chicken Satay skewers, 2 fried dumplings and 3 spring rolls.  The Chicken Satay was marinated and glazed with coconut cream and served with a sweetly savory peanut sauce that was like the tastiest and smoothest peanut butter I’ve ever eaten.  The fried dumplings were full of spicy ground meat and were crispy on the outside.  The spring rolls were also delicious.

My entree was the Pad Pik Paow with Shrimp.  It was a stir fry of shrimp, veggies and flavored with basil leaves and chili paste.  It was spicy and cooked well, but I would have liked a little more of the delicious sauce to drench my rice with.  My kids both got the  Kei Krob which is a battered and deep fried chicken cooked in a Thai sweet sauce mixed with sliced ginger and crushed peanuts.  I was surprised at how delicious this was!  It is possibly the most delicious sweet chicken dish I’ve ever had.  It had such a balance between the sweet sauce and the savory elements of the dish.  That is an easy dish to get wrong, with a sauce to cloyingly sweet.  It is perfect here.  The red curry with chicken is creamy and spicy and is loaded with crisp vegetables and tender chicken.  It’s yummy even the next day!

Lake Wylie SC · Restaurants

Cherry in Lake Wylie, SC

The foodie group went to South Carolina this weekend!  It’s not really that big of a deal, it was just a 45 minute drive for us, but sounds very tri-state, I thought.

We visited Cherry Hibachi Grill in Lake Wylie last night and it was probably the best hibachi I’ve ever had.  Not only was the food amazing, but the whole backside of the restaurant is a window that overlooks the lake.  You just have to ignore the parking lot and road.

Apparently this is a busy place, but we had reservations for our party.  It didn’t matter, when we arrived at 8 pm it was not terribly crowded, even for a Saturday night.  Don’t let the fact that it is in a strip mall fool you, this place is great!

We began with Money Bag appetizers.  They were fried treats with a mixture of different stuffings and served with a deliciously tangy sweet chili sauce.  They looked like little presents and tasted even better.

My husband ordered sushi rolls and pronounced them fresh and delicious.  He then proceeded to eat my hibachi.

Sushi
Sushi

The hibachi comes with a salad and a bowl of onion soup.  The salad dressing I chose was the ginger dressing and it was thick and orange, not at all watery.  Very full of flavor.  My friends opted for the shrimp sauce and it was creamy and delicious, but not quite as flavorful.  It is much milder than most shrimp sauces I’ve tried.  Also, we get 2 jumbo shrimps as a little appetizer as well.  Mine were big, pink and juicy!  Next time I’ll order those for my meal.

The hibachi I chose was Filet with Scallops.  It is often  hard to get your steaks and especially your scallops cooked properly on that grill top, but our chef did it perfectly.  My steak was tender and just salty enough with the soy cooking sauce.  My scallops were seared perfectly and large and plump.  Alongside your proteins were rice, noodles, zucchini, onions and mushrooms.

This restaurant is definitely a new favorite.  I can’t wait to go back!

Cornelius

Alton’s in Cornelius, NC

Well, we capped off another Restaurant Week in style.  We visited Alton’s Kitchen and Cocktails in Cornelius at the recommendation of one of our clients and we were not disappointed.  Alton’s is located in what was once Charleston Chops, and the building is updated, but still richly appointed.  It has, most notably two flowing staircases at either end of the restaurant, which while beautiful, did become tiresome watching harried servers race up and down all night.  Maybe a dumbwaiter and a server or two just stationed upstairs?

Restaurant week is a lot like Valentine’s Day.  Super busy, with a prix fixe menu for the masses.  It isn’t really fair to judge a restaurant by normal standards during these times, but if that is when you visit, well…you gotta report.  Alton’s did pretty well.  We had some issues with timing and a hide-and-seek server who let our drinks get low, but other staff made up for these few snafus.  When we needed a fork, another server was glad to retrieve it.  Same with the drinks.  BUT, I despise having to flag down a server to get what is obvious to the eye if you’d simply walk by a time or two.  Another irritant was that our dessert was brought out perhaps 15 minutes later than our dining companions, despite my having ordered my bread pudding with my meal (the prix fixe menu).  Just as we were getting restless, the chef came to the table to explain that they had run out of bread puddings, and had to bake more fresh.  She offered to bring us something while we waited and to just pack our bread pudding up for us to take home.  We opted for the ice cream sandwich, which was delicious.  I appreciated the chef meeting the problem head-on and offering us a workable solution so our companions didn’t have to sit there and wait longer than necessary.

I digress.  When we were seated, a waiter immediately greeted us and brought us a carafe of water and took our drink orders.  They actually had “sweet tea” which I commend them for because many nicer restaurants only offer unsweetened tea.  The only comment I can make that may leave room for improvement is that the water could use some ice.

Our appetizers were delicious.  We ordered Lobster bisque, tuna poke and shrimp cocktail.  I had the shrimp cocktail, and it was truly one of the better ones.  They used Jumbo Shrimp, and they were perfectly poached, not too chewy.  They served it with two sauces, a typical cocktail sauce and a tartar sauce.  They were both tart and tangy, but I preferred the typical cocktail sauce.  Both my diners proclaimed their appetizers to be delicious.

Update March 2016: I visited with my Girls Nosh group and we had a much better experience.  Everything was delicious!  The Prime Rib Stuffed Mushrooms were my favorites, I think.  They were really huge and juicy!  The stuffing had a hint of horseradish and cheese making it very creamy and rich.  Divine!

altonsstuffedmsuhrooms (2)

This is not an appetizers, per se, but my friend and I wanted to share it for our appetizer, so the restaurant kindly split it onto two plates for us.  This is the Crab and Shrimp Louie.  Tender seafood atop mesclun adorned with sliced avocado, tomatoes and topped with a homemade creamy and tangy 1000 Island dressing.  It was delicate, but very satisfying.  And very fresh.

For our entrees we all got something a little different.  Robert got the Slow-cooked Baby Back Ribs served with chili lime grilled corn and creamy cole slaw.  The spicy and smoky sauce on the tender ribs had a wonderful kick.  The corn was also wonderful, with a tang from the lime and a deep savoriness from the grilling.  Harry ordered a Crispy Chicken Salad.  It was loaded with fresh avocado, rich eggs, bacon and draped with a creamy thick homemade Ranch dressing.  Dustin got the seared ahi tuna.  It was seared lightly and crusted with sesame seeds.    I got the grilled swordfish on cheese grits with lobster gravy.  Honestly, the fish was really firm and not my favorite texture, but that wasn’t the chef’s fault.  That is just the nature of the swordfish.  It had a nice chargrilled flavor.  What I LOVED was the cheesy, creamy grits that this fish rested on.  I’m not sure I’ve ever had better grits, even in Charleston.  The lobster gravy was lighter than you’d think, but still creamy and flavorful.  No chunks of lobster, though, which did disappoint me somewhat.  Laid across the top as a garnish were grilled asparagus spears, and they were wonderful, just cooked enough.  I made a meal off of the grits and asparagus.

On another trip during Restaurant week they featured Lobster Tail and Filet Kabob.  Heaven.

Jumbo Shrimp Pasta was another favorite.  Big pink shrimp drenched in lemon butter and tossed with baby spinach, pine nuts and sauteed mushrooms made for a beautiful and scrumptious dish.

Megan had the special of the night: Grilled Bone-in Pork Chop.  The pork chop was flavorful, but Megan said it was a little undercooked at the bone.  The mashed potatoes were creamy and perfect and the grilled asparagus still had a nice snap to it.

I don’t know what got into me on this night, because I normally default to seafood or beef, but on this night I got Parmesan Crusted Chicken and I’m so glad I did.  I mean, when something is fried with cheese, you just can’t go wrong.  This was no exception.  The chicken was crispy and seasoned well and the lemony sauce atop it was perfect with the salty capers and the sweet tomatoes.  The creamy spinach served on the side was smooth and a perfect compliment for the crispy chicken.

Dessert, as I mentioned, was a bit of a fiasco.  We enjoyed homemade Oreo ice cream sandwiches and bread pudding.  The cookie sandwiches were delicious, topped with chocolate sauce and best eaten with a spoon instead of picking it up with your fingers.  My bread pudding was merely ok.  Nothing special, I’d opt for something different next time.

Gastonia · Restaurants

Nick’s Steak and Taphouse in Gastonia, NC

Nick’s in Gastonia is a place I’ve tried to visit a few times before, but the timing was never right.  I’ve gone a time or two and it was in between services, or closed for renovations.  Finally the Foodie Bunch made a reservation and we visited last night.  And since going out every weekend since January of this year, I think we all agreed that this was the second worst experience for dining we’d encountered.

There was one handicapped spot in front of the restaurant and it was taken, so we used valet.  It was awkward because we had to stop in the middle of the street and make a dash for it with traffic blocked behind us, and hoping not to get hit by the traffic coming from the other lane.  Once we got done with dinner, the handicapped space was available, but the valet parked my car across the street instead of making things easier on us by simply doing a u-turn and getting the vehicle in a spot closer while it was raining.  Valet fail.

So we get to the hostess station, and were promptly seated per our reservation.  We were escorted to a booth with a two-top pushed up against it with 2 chairs.  So, we had to move the two chairs to slide into the booth.  Then we sat and the two top wobbled all night long.  We asked why we weren’t given one of the 6 top tables, and she said “other people are in them.”  I commented “but we made these reservations a week in advance, wouldn’t that give you time to plan for us to have a table designed for 6?”  She didn’t answer, so I tried to move on despite our discomfort.  Seating fail.

We begin to order and were promptly told that the prime rib was gone in addition to 2 other steaks.  We quickly went back to the menu to pick another item.  My friend and I ordered the French Onion Soup for appetizers.  The waitress came back from the kitchen to report they were out.  We then chose Shrimp and Crab Bisque, which we were told was out, too.  I finally settled on seared scallops.  So, 3 entree choices gone, and now 2 appetizers gone.  Our hopes for a delicious meal were quickly being extinguished.

The seared scallops arrived and looked nice.  They were sitting on a bed of sweet potato puree and looked to be seared  lightly.  I shared with table mates and we all agreed that they were just underdone, not enough to send back, but not perfect enough to enjoy.  The puree below was also not hot.  My friend got the Firecracker Shrimp and it was much better, though the shrimp were a bit fishy tasting.

The Caesar is very cheesy. And has potato sticks atop.

By the time our entrees arrived, we had been sitting there at least an hour.  With empty glasses.  The steaks were barely warm.  The compound butter didn’t even melt on them, just sat right on top.  My dish was crab stuffed flounder with fried squash and mashed potatoes.  The sides were both ice cold and my fish was flavorless.  After one bite of everything, I sent the whole plate back and asked to see the manager. Food Fail.

The manager was gracious, apologetic and clearly exhausted from a long night where nothing had gone right.  She comped our meals, though we try to reject her offer.  We left a sizable gratuity for the waitress, though the service was not terrific.  We all felt like she couldn’t face coming to the table to give or hear any more bad news.

I doubt I’ll go back, to be honest.  Frankly, I don’t think Nick’s will be around much longer TO try again, unless they really revamp their service.  If I were to give them a second chance it would be because the manager came by and tried to make it right at the end.

Joe’s Crab Shack in Eatontown, NJ

003

I’ve eaten at quite a few of these chain restaurants, and maybe I’m just a sucker for crab…but I love them.    On Urbanspoon, I notice how there are quite a lot of complaints about service, but the service we received the night we dined with Joe’s was exemplary.  We had our food in a timely manner and our drinks were always full.

We both ordered a pot of mixed seafood, mine included Lobster.  It had this dry seasoning all over it that ended up in your mouth as you are cracking your crabs, and mixed with the juices.  It was cooked well, plentiful and delicious!
